Come and join us at Bristol Voices Community Choir … we celebrate our 25th birthday this year!

Who we are:   Bristol Voices Community Choir is an a cappella four part harmony choir which welcomes singers of all abilities with no audition. Founded in 1999, we are a true community choir, self financing and managed by our membership through an annually elected committee.
Our musical director, Jeremy Avis, teaches our songs by ear and practice; there is no need to be able to read music to learn songs. We provide song lyrics and teacher tracks on our website for each harmony part for home learning. See Jeremy’s website for examples of his work and background.
Our eclectic repertoire includes world music, jazz, pop, folk, classical, gospel as well as some of Jeremy’s original compositions.
Our emphasis is on experiencing the joy of singing together in harmony, which is known to benefit mental and social wellbeing, and for those who want to, we usually give three public performances annually, generally as fund raisers for local charities.
We are always ready to welcome new singers; just contact us or come along to a free taster session. (link to When where how to join)?
Our History:    Bristol Voices Community Choir originated in a Workers Education Association singing class for women. When the classes finished in 1997 the steering group of Sally Lewis, Chris Gaine and Liza Parkinson applied to The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for a grant to continue and expand to form a community choir in St. Werburghs .  They were successful and were awarded £3,500 to book halls and hire choir leaders and Bristol Voices Community Choir was the result, starting in January 1999. In the spring of 2000 the choir performed at the very first Bristol Community Choir Convention at St Georges, Brandon Hill, an event which the current choir continues to support.

How to join:   If you’re interested in joining the choir we’d love to see you. You can come for a free taster session any Wednesday during the school term – you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome.  For more details, or to let us know you’re coming, get in touch via the Contact us page. Otherwise just turn up on the night – on arrival, ask to speak to one of our committee members and they’ll make you feel at home.

Choir sessions:  7:30 – 9:30pm each Wednesday during term time at St Werburgh’s Primary School, James Street, Bristol BS2 9US.  Parking and bike racks are available at the front of the school. There is parking space for disabled drivers right in front of the school doors and there’s level access right through into the hall where we sing.

We start at 7.30pm prompt and people arrive from 7.20pm onwards. If you arrive after 7.30pm please ring the bell and someone will come and let you in. We start with a short physical and vocal warm up and have a ten-minute break halfway through the evening; a chance to mingle and meet people.

Fees: are currently £7.50 a week (£5 concs.) payable at the start of each term – we’ll collect the money from you (cash or cheque or bank transfer) when you next come along, if you decide you want to join. Ask for bank details if needed. Concession rates are for people who are solely in receipt of benefit income, or full-time students, or under-18’s

About the singing:   We sing in four parts: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. You may already know what your singing range is – if not, you can move between groups to find which suits you best.

Performances:   As well as the weekly practice the choir normally performs at a small number of public events each year. These are usually in support of local charities and are not compulsory, though members are encouraged to take part – and they are always enjoyable. For these performances we wear black with a creative splash of turquoise – see the pictures on our website.

The Committee:   The Choir is run by a committee of members, elected annually. They meet several times a year and update the choir on any news and events. We’ll make sure you know who the committee members are so you can always ask one of them if you have any questions.

To get started:  please scroll up to the top of this page and enter you email address to receive newsletters and Jeremy’s weekly blog. Please do this as soon as you join the choir so we can send you information and reminders about performance details, term dates etc.
